Anabolic Steroids Effects of Anabolic Steroids

It’s important to let your doctor know if you notice any change in your mood or behaviour, particularly if you begin to feel depressed, or have any disturbing thoughts or feelings. Most of these problems go away if the dose is lowered or the medicine is stopped. If you are taking a course of Predinone for longer than two weeks, you should consult your doctor before stopping them from avoiding steroid withdrawal symptoms.

However, there are some things you can do to reduce this risk and its impact on you. Prednisone is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation, itching and swelling caused by many underlying conditions and illnesses. If you’re planning a family, you should discuss this with your doctor, as it’s important that a mother stays healthy during pregnancy and that flare-ups are avoided.

This is likely to be longer (at least 24 months) if you have had a stem cell transplant. Let a member of your medical team know straightaway if you notice any signs of infection. Early action can help stop problems from developing into more serious difficulties.

Even if you successfully control steroid weight gain, you should expect to appear heavier while on these drugs due to fat redistribution. Three symptoms of a steroid overdose are increased body temperature, trembling and convulsions. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, contact 999 immediately.

A low level of serum albumin suggests your liver isn’t functioning properly. Cirrhosis is a stage of ARLD where the liver has become significantly scarred. Tendon rupture – Cortisone injections can weaken tendons putting them at risk of rupture. This is one reason why we may limit the number of injections you can have to one area.

Diagnosing alcohol-related liver disease

Health professionals who are not specialists in MS, including some GPs and A&E staff, may not realise that a high dose of steroids is needed to treat a relapse. If you are unable to contact your MS team, you may need to bring this to the attention of any health professional who offers you steroid treatment. Some MS services produce a card with details of the recommended treatment for a relapse that you can show other health professionals.

Can You Mix Prednisone With Alcohol?

If you regularly drink alcohol to excess, tell your GP so they can check if your liver is damaged. This means ARLD is frequently diagnosed during tests for other conditions, or at a stage of advanced liver damage. Arrange to have your steroid injection at least 2 weeks before, or delay it for more than 2 weeks, after any vaccination.

Your doctor, rheumatology nurse or pharmacist should give you a steroid card if you need one. Make sure any change to your dose of steroid is updated on the card. If you’re taking high doses of steroids, or if you’re on them for more than three weeks, you’ll need to carry a steroid card.

In many cases, people with alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) don’t have any noticeable symptoms until their liver is badly damaged. Less commonly, alcoholic hepatitis can occur if you drink a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time (binge drinking). Drinking a large amount of alcohol, even for just a few days, can lead to a build-up of fats in the liver.

Complications of alcohol-related liver disease

Steroid withdrawal in those taking steroids for a long time can be dangerous and severe. Your healthcare provider will need to monitor your withdrawal carefully and ensure that your condition and blood work are stable enough before commencing a tapering-off regime. You may wonder if a glass of wine or the odd beer is okay whilst taking Prednisone. Whilst one or two alcoholic drinks a week won’t have much impact, drinking above the Chief Medical Officer’s Alcohol Guidelines can have.

Why inject a corticosteroid?

If you have been taking prednisone for several weeks, it’s important to consider withdrawal side effects. Talk to your doctor for professional treatment advice on how to best manage coming off of it. If you drink excessively and have been prescribed steroids for a chronic condition, it could be a good opportunity to speak with your doctor about giving up alcohol for your long-term health. While the occasional drink may not cause any issues while taking prednisone, you should always speak to your healthcare provider first and follow their advice.
